 Profile

Femicide - defined as the “criminal act taken by an individual (generally male relative) in which the life of a female is taken as a means to cope with the perceived har (shame) her suspected behaviour wrought on the family” (“Honour” Crimes, Paradigms, and violence against women) - and crimes against women under the guise of “family honour” represent a reality in different societies all around the world. The Arab Region is one of them as the occupied Palestinian territory is.
Many Palestinian non-governmental organizations have been the vanguard in breaking the silence and still much efforts need to be devoted to reject society-wide the relation between crimes against women and the notion of family/male “honor”.
Full understanding of the broadness of the problem in the occupied Palestinian territory results quite difficult, given, among other factors relating to the military occupation of the territory, to the fact that there are no formal statistics and that cases are easily not reported to the police because of the societal understanding of the concept of “honour” related to the family and to all its members, in particular to women.

UNIFEM Office in the occupied Palestinian territory has contributed to the funding of this sensitive, about 1 hour-long, documentary which tackles directly the issue of femicide and crimes against women in the oPt, through witness of assaults and people somehow involved. This documentary is believed to be a challenging tool to combat femicide and crimes against women committed under the guise of the “family honour”, to raise awareness around the issue and to break the silence which still protects perpetrators and leaves women helpless.

 Beneficiaries

- Women
- Communities at large

Development Objectives

The overall goal of this project is to decrease, in the occupied Palestinian territory, the number of cases of femicide and crimes perpetrated against women in the name and under the pretext of family honour, fostering a culture of women’s human rights and promoting among the population, including youth, an understanding of femicide and crimes against women in terms of violation of basic human rights.
The project aims, in the long term, to modify the general perception of violence against women from a private matter to a public concern. This will feasibly contribute to positively modify attitudes toward this crimes and to raise the demand for subsequent actions from recognized authorities.

 Immediate Objectives

Immediate objective of this project is to break the silence often surrounding cases of femicide and crimes against women, which facilitates impunity, and to raise awareness among the communities while showing the actual face of such brutal gender-based crimes as grave violations of fundamental human rights.
