Building a knowledge base

Building a knowledge base on effective strategies for engendering mainstream development.

 Profile

“Achieving E-Quality in the IT Sector” program is an effort to develop technical and livelihood skills of local communities and raise awareness among females on the opportunities available for them to join the labor force and participate in the job market.

The aim of this program is to enable women to join the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector in Jordan by building their computer and technical skills. This is proposed by building computer-networking skills through the gender focused Cisco Networking Academy Program, which will increase women’s competitiveness in the professional labor market.

The academy graduates will be linked to the job market through the coordinated efforts of both the private and public sectors, in a recruitment activity formulated under the program. Also, the program aims to create a suitable environment for policy-making that facilitates addressing the gender gap in the male-dominated market.

Based on the success of Phase I, the project was extended for two more years, 12 academies have joined the program. Over 600 students graduated in Phase I and more are expected to graduate at the end of Phase II.

Achievements up to date:

  • Development and dissemination of "Jordanian Women in the ICT Space" research

  • 1600 students enrolled from Phase I and II (57% are women)

 Immediate Objectives

  • To raise awareness on women’s participation in the ICT sector among stakeholders including policy makers, market stakeholders and students to ultimately create a positive policy environment and create equal opportunities for women in the ICT sector.
  • To build the capacity of women and enable them to compete and gain higher positions in the ICT sector through continuing to support already existing gender focused Cisco Networking Academy Programs (CNAPs) within national institutions.
  • To enhance women’s soft and professional skills through conducting workshops and training courses on human development skills, career development skills, market required IT skills and gender awareness.
